Family therapy, also known as systemic therapy can help those in close relationships to better understand and support each other. It enables all family members to express and explore difficult thoughts and emotions safely and better understand each other's experiences and views. Family therapy builds on your families strengths by working together to make useful changes in your relationships and in your lives. It can give greater understanding of each others needs and offer a safe space to be honest and open with each other.
We will work through 5 stages of therapy starting with each person separately and then bring the family unit together either piece by piece or all at once depending on the circumstances. We will work together to move through the stages of family therapy at a pace that is right for your family.
This first stage is where we lay down the foundations of our therapeutic relationship that will be built on trust and mutual respect. The space will begin to feel safe enough to open up about any concerns and explore thoughts and feelings around these.
Stage 2 is where I will begin to understand the family history, roles and communication patterns to enable me to better understand the family as a unit. By understanding root causes, impacts and emotional triggers we can begin to look at more underlying emotions.
Effective communication is the key to a healthy family dynamic and in this stage we look at what communication patterns are working and what are not working. We may look at new ways to communicate, actively listen and validate each other by replacing negative communication patterns with positive ones.
As communication improves and conflicts begin to be resolved family therapy will look at anything that still feels unresolved. I will guide you through the process of forgiveness, acceptance and letting go by giving and receiving empathy for each other.
The final stage is about maintaining lasting changes within the family unit and incorporating changes into your daily lives. We will look at any potential set backs and how these can be handled in a way that encourages the new family dynamics to remain positive.
I have lived experience of the challenges that families face when your child is neurodiverse. I have two brothers who were both impacted in very different ways, trying to fit into an education system that did not feel like a fit for them. Feeling different and like you don't fit in is not fun for anyone and can really impact a child's well-being. I also know from a parents perspective the pressure of trying to do what is best for your child whilst dealing with your own emotions and the daily struggles this involves.
Mental health issues are hard for everybody in the family unit and often bring strong emotions of shame, guilt and even blame to name a few. I have worked with depression, anxiety, voice hearing, eating disorders, self-harm and suicidal ideation.
I have extensive experience in a secondary school setting, working both in the mainstream school and a student support provision. I have worked with looked after children, vulnerable children, children with developmental delays and children with both physical and mental health issues. I have worked in partnership with parents and schools to advocate for children and their families. I know the limitations of support available and i also know what is is like to be a parent who is not receiving support from education settings.
